Working in co-ordination with the University of Oxford and Beard Construction, 3D Aluminium have designed, manufactured, and installed approximately 400m2 of aluminium curtain walling rooflights to the St. Cross library in Oxford.
In order to carry out the replacement scheme over the Winter period, an elaborate temporary roof scaffold complete with birdcage was erected to create an ‘indoor environment’ to enable the works to be carried out with minimal disruption to the University which was fully operational for the duration of the works.
Having been involved with the initial design of the scheme, 3D provided a comprehensive set of structural calculations to ensure the proposal was suitable for the application. Key to the design was the requirement to provide similar module widths to the existing patent glazing whilst also installing mechanical ventilation louvres spanning the width of 3no. modules. In order to maintain the design scope, we introduced ‘dummy mullions’ to mimic the existing rooflights and installed heat strengthened laminate to comply with the structural calculations.
Delivered within budget and on programme.
