February 2021

CAB names its new CEO
The Association has named its new CEO. Phil Slinger will step into the shoes of Justin Ratcliffe, who stepped down from the role last year. Phil joins CAB on 1st March 2021 and I am sure you will join me in wishing him every success as the figurehead of your Association.
Phil brings a wealth of experience to CAB, he is currently Director of one of the largest and most respected Association Management companies in the UK, with overall responsibility for more than thirty five Trade Associations, Professional Societies and Charities. Phil has also held senior leadership roles for a range of high profile UK and international membership organisations, professional bodies and trade associations in the Construction, Manufacturing, DIY, Retail and Healthcare sectors.
I know that Phil is looking forward to meeting members as soon as it is possible, listening to their concerns on the current climate and ensuring that the Association meets the demands of members as we gradually recover from the worst pandemic in living history.

Future Homes Standard Consultation
As we transition to a Carbon Neutral future, all building materials are under scrutiny to ensure that the industry chooses the most thermal efficient products for our homes that also fit into a net zero carbon economy. The Government has set out an ambitious roadmap that will have a big effect our industry. The Association is calling on its members to get involved in the MHCLG Part L & F Consultation to ensure that the industry is prepared for the changes ahead. The Consultation is one of the key topics to be discussed at the Association’s Technical Committee meeting to be held on the 10th March.
Future Homes Standard Consultation – Government response
The Government ran a public consultation from 1 October 2019 to 7 February 2020 on proposed changes to the Building Regulations for new homes in England. CAB provided an input to this Consultation and a summary of all responses and the Government’s response have now been published.
Future Buildings Standard Consultation – have your say
As mentioned above, the Government has started to consult on changes to Part L and Part F for non-domestic buildings and existing homes in England, building on the Future Homes Standard with proposals for a Future Buildings Standard, providing “a pathway to highly efficient non-domestic buildings which are zero carbon ready”. The UK has already set in law a target to bring its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.

An Uncertain Market
With both Brexit and Covid-19 issues still very much with us, 2021 will continue to be a challenge for all businesses. Both the ‘State of the Trade’ survey from CAB and the recent CPA (Construction Products Association) forecasts do offer cautious hope for the year ahead.
CAB’s 2020 final quarter ‘State of the Trade Survey’ showed a distinct cautious outlook within the fenestration industry compared to the wider construction industry. CAB’s survey is taken from its membership and the results benchmarked against the wider construction industry by the CPA. Normally CAB members fare much better, or are more optimistic than that of the general construction industry, but the last report of 2020 offers an interesting insight.
