The requirements were to provide day to day ventilation to control temperature and air quality in the open space beneath the ceiling of the interchange. Usually large ETFE pillow vents like these require rack and pinion drives. However these drives could not be used as they would have clashed with the frames positioned directly beneath the vents. Dyer solved this by providing heavy duty twin chain drives. These drives were known to Dyer, but had not ever been used in this capacity. Harnessing the 3000N force generated these by these drives allowed the vents to open a full 1000mm stroke.
