Our intention is to build a toolbox to aid our members in understanding apprenticeships by assisting with the following:
• How to encourage people into our industry
• How to upskill your existing workforce
• The criteria for having an apprentice
• Funding for an apprentice
Whilst investigating how we can help it has thrown up a lot of questions and we are considering various avenues on how to assist. In the meantime, we are pleased to announce that we have partnered with GFTS and Building Our Skills.

This includes advertising for an apprentice, the vetting process, all advice on employing an apprentice, what is required as an employer, what is required from the apprentice, salary expectations, funding advice, advice on many other aspects of having an apprentice.

When considering employing an apprentice there are various aspects to consider, which include the following:
• An apprentice needs to be employed throughout their apprenticeship
• The duration of an apprenticeship is 24-30 months
• 16-18 year old apprentices are not allowed to work more than 40 hours a week
• 16-18 year old apprentices should receive at least the apprenticeship minimum wage throughout the duration of their apprenticeship or until they are 19
• Apprentices over 19 years of age should receive at least the minimum apprenticeship rate for the first year and after that the national minimum wage rate for their age group
• Employers are responsible for paying the apprenticeships wage
