Aluminium in Building: its role in tackling climate change
Speaker: Prof Michael Stacey, The Bartlett School of Architecture UCL & Michael Stacey Architects
Date: 10 November 2022
Climate change is arguably the overriding environmental issue for our time. It is reckoned that the UK built environment has direct control over 25% of total UK greenhouse gas emissions.
The need to decarbonise our sector is pressing. What role should the aluminium in building sector play?
In this CAB lunchtime webinar Prof Michael Stacey, The Bartlett School of Architecture UCL & Michael Stacey Architects, will explore:
- The growth of the aluminium building product market
- What are the risks of aluminium being replaced by other materials?
- How can CAB members better educate their customers when it comes to their products?
- The role of new regulations and the use of data, including EPD
- Who is using this data and how?
- Aluminium and the circular economy – recyclability and recycling
- Why should we think about life cycles and what happens to buildings when their life ends?

CE marking has been a legal requirement in the UK since 2013, but from 31 December 2022 it is the government’s stated intention that CE marking will no longer be recognised in the GB market. Hence in a few weeks time, construction products that require conformity marking including windows and doors must be UKCA marked.
- Why do manufacturers need to comply?
- What do manufacturers need to do to comply?
- What are the penalties for non-compliance?
