Curtain Walling & Firestopping
28th September 2023
This presentation looks at some of the key and unique functions of curtain walling façades, and what differentiates them from other facade types. We will examine the UK’s regulatory requirements for fire protection for curtain walling and supplementary guidance available. We will also look at applicable terminology and definitions that are crucial to understanding the functional requirements of protecting the building from the spread of fire via the facade.
Our speaker is Barnaby Carrick, Senior Technical Engineer at Siderise. He willl look at the performance requirements of fire stops, including which ones are suitable for this specific application and what important principles they must incorporate. He will also take a closer look at the testing and certification of curtain walling fire stops, highlighting the importance of system testing and a wholistic design for protecting curtain walling facades.
* This is an update of the webinar from 11 May*

Testing for a Safer Future
5th October 2023
Paul Morrell, the government’s first Chief Construction Adviser (2009-2012), led the recent independent review of the testing regime for construction products: Testing for a Safer Future – An Independent Review of the Construction Products Testing Regime. In this webinar, Paul will summarise the findings of the review and map out how the system could and should change.
This webinar is not only for those testing products day-to-day but for anyone involved in the development, marketing and installation of construction products, working to ensure that users can make informed decisions when specifying and selecting products, as well as ensuring that products are installed, used and maintained as the manufacturer intended.

Achieving Competence in the Building Envelope Sector
19th October 2023
How can you achieve and demonstrate competence in the building envelope sector and why is that increasingly important? The Building Safety Act named HSE as the new Building Safety Regulator (BSR) in England. One of its key functions is to encourage the built environment industry to improve their competence. Organisations must have appropriate management systems, processes, policies and resources in place to demonstrate their competence.
The Joint Competency Initiative (JCI) for the Envelope Sector was formed following the Grenfell Tower tragedy and the introduction of the Building Safety Act, with the aim of setting out a vision for requirements relating to both organisational and individual competence of those working in the glazing, cladding and roofing sectors.
Neville Grunwald, Director of Facades and Roofs, Wates Construction and Chair of the Joint Competence Initiative for the Envelope Sector (JCI) is the presenter for this webinar.

Curtain Walling & Acoustics
2nd November 2023
This presentation is ideal for contractors and manufacturers of curtain walling façade systems who would like an introduction to acoustics.
During this webinar, our speaker Barnaby Carrick, Senior Technical Engineer at Siderise, will look at some of the key terminology you will come across in relation to acoustics in curtain walling façades and also some of the minimum requirements based on the UK’s building regulations.
He will also show how sound travels in many paths in curtain walling façades. By touching on library data he will demonstrate a couple of the key principles you can learn from to improve your designs acoustically. He will also consider potential performance limiting factors and how simple design and product changes can improve a façade. Barnaby will also touch on the importance of good workmanship and how drastically it can affect your design.

Key Changes for Building Safety
9th November 2023
The Building Safety Act became law in April 2022, overhauling existing regulations and creating three new bodies to provide effective oversight of the new regime.
In this webinar Dr Andrew Taylor, Head of Technical, Association for Specialist Fire Protection, will outline how the Building Safety Act is changing construction so that building occupants feel safe and are safe.
Many of the detailed provisions in the Act will be implemented through a programme of secondary legislation. In this webinar we will explore where we are in this programme and what that means for all of us.

Understanding the Circular Economy & Net Zero
16th November 2023
With the UK construction industry facing significant challenges including the need to reduce environmental impact, deliver social value and remain competitive, there is an imperative for industry professionals to understand how climate change, carbon emissions and the circular economy is relevant to the operation of their business, and how they work with their stakeholders and wider supply chain.
The British Chambers of Commerce latest report showed that action on net zero has been held back by a lack of business understanding – businesses are not yet fully engaging with net zero targets, which is having knock-on effects on customers, consumers and, of course, the environment.
This lunchtime session will give you a high level understanding about what the Circular Economy is, how it fits in with climate change and Net Zero Carbon, and how it is relevant to the construction sector. Our presenter for this session is Debbie Ward, director at Cirklo Consult, which delivers circular economy related training, education and advisory services including Carbon Literacy training.

Supporting the Built Environment through Product Traceability
30th November 2023
In her Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety following the Grenfell Tower tragedy, Dame Judith Hackitt called for the creation of a consistent labelling and product traceability system to improve building safety. The need for a building safety ‘golden thread’ was identified, enabled by products carrying ‘permanent marking’ to ensure their ready identification to property stakeholders. Although not yet legislation, how can manufacturers contribute to this golden thread of information through digitally enabled product traceability? In this webinar, learn about BSI Identity – a product traceability system that allows supply chain operators quick, easy access to a range of product information. It means an asset’s related certifications, data sheets and user guides can be made available to specifiers and installers via a mobile phone or app.
Our speakers from BSI for this webinar are: Dan Rossiter FCIAT, Built Environment Standards Lead and Ross Matthews, Head of Sales, BSI Identify.
